Our mission and focus

Created in 2022, our mission is to support the transition to a healthier and more inclusive society.

Our focus is on chronic conditions and disabilities: challenges that affect millions, but often receive too little funding, particularly when solutions are early-stage, specialised or seen as commercially unattractive. API brings Astorg’s healthcare investing experience, sector knowledge and network to identify where targeted capital and strategic support can make a meaningful difference.

Types of investments

Our strategy, in depth

We deploy flexible philanthropic capital using three complementary routes: direct investments, specialised fund commitments and targeted grants. Across each, we look for organisations aligned with our focus on chronic conditions and disabilities, with a clear unmet need and the potential to improve health or inclusion outcomes.

Direct investments

We support early‑stage companies creating solutions for people with disabilities and chronic conditions. We typically invest from Seed to Series A, mainly in B2B or B2B2C models, using equity, loans or hybrid funding depending on what best fits the organisation’s needs.

Specialized funds

We commit capital to specialized funds addressing underfunded health or inclusion areas where a targeted investment approach can unlock new solutions. We have a preference for smaller funds, innovative structures, and first‑time managers, where our support can be’ particularly catalytic.

Targeted "mission-aligned" grants

We support high‑impact non‑profits put forward by colleagues across our international offices via an employee match‑funding programme and an Annual Call for Projects..

One Astorg approach

API is closely supported by Astorg, mobilizing its teams and partners to contribute their time, knowledge, and resource. This includes helping source and assess opportunities, joining advisory review groups, and providing ad-hoc technical support.

This approach leverages Astorg’s healthcare expertise, rigorous investment processes, and international network, to maximize its impact.

API draws on Astorg’s analytical excellence, governance standards, and long‑term mindset underpinning the firm’s investment activities to our philanthropic mission.

Funding and governance

API is funded by Astorg through a combination ofmanagement fees and carried interest contributions. It is organised as Astorg Philanthropy Investments, a fund under the auspices of, and managed by, the King Baudouin Foundation. All proceeds generated by API investments remain within API for its philanthropic purposes and may be reinvested in future opportunities aligned with our mission.
